Temperature Measurement

Introduction

In many areas it is essential to obtain reliable information about the temperature and its temporal behavior and/or spatial distribution, respectively. In some cases conventional electrical thermometers (resistance thermometers, thermocouples) fail, e.g. due to strong electromagnetic interference. Here the fiber based thermometry plays off its vantages: A small amount of phosphor is glued to the end of an optical fiber. After the excitation of the phosphor by a short optical pulse through the fiber the decay of the emitted fluorescent light is measured with a photodetector. Since the decay time is a function of the temperature this method is ideally suited for temperature measurement.859
